Unit 23

P1

A) Purpose
The festival Glastonbury is a live music event which is made for entertainment. It's one of the biggest  open field festivals in the world, best known for contemporary music, but also features dance, comedy, theater, circus, cabaret and many other arts. Te festival encourages youth culture around the world

B) Content
I will be looking at glastonbury 2016.
Glastonbury is based in the countryside for the weekend, usually its end of June (21st - 25th June 2017).  Every part of the festival has its own meaning/theme, following that each area has its own attractions, artist, games, food and drinks. The idea of the whole festival is influenced by hippie ethics which is to have a festival which is free spiritual. That is exactly why each stage has its own theme e.g. rock, punk, pop.

The Other Stage is special because it set out to look directly over the Somerset Levels towards Glastonbury.Back in 1980s when the festival was extending that's when the stage was launched along side other attractions. In 1990 The Other Stage became as popular as the Pyramid. In 2015/2016 the Co of Glastonbury wanted to change the stage to suit Glastonbury better, therefore they had all new floor plans, height of the stage was extended and so was the width.

C) Target Audience
The target audience for Glastonbury can be up to any age and any gender. Glastonbury allows to have children under 12, however not many go due to the high risk of the quantity of people who attend. Its dangerous for children to go because they can get lost in the big crowd or in  the whole standing area.

People who attend Glastonbury are very likely to use their spending power on events like Glastonbury (festivals), concerts and summer music events. that target audience will also have an active social lifestyle where they will spend their time with friends or family, especially at festivals for the weekend.
The audience that mostly attends the festival is between the ages of 20-24 or 30-34. The festival is mainly appealing for the adult audience due to the artist who play. The artists are ZZ Top, Muse, Earth Wind Fire who are liked by the older audience (30-40) however, they also have people playing like The 1975, Jess Glynne and Skepta that will be liked by the younger audience (20-26).

D) Design/Style
The festival has a different design for every area which makes it unique, the areas are all urban/hippie/cultural. The idea of them are so the different cultures can match the area and they can feel 'free' doing what they love. Genres seen there: contemporary music, dance, comedy, theater, circus, cabaret and many other arts. ''The ticket price for Glastonbury 2017 is £238 + £5 booking fee per ticket (children aged 12 and under are admitted free of charge and do not need a ticket)''

This is an example of all the glastonbury 2009 (the other tickets I wasn't able to find). The tickets now look similar to what they looked like the 2000s. Every ticket is personalised with a photo and the owners names.  Every ticket is always the same theme as the festival that year for example: the tickets will be the same design as the programme.

The programmes in 1997, 2011 and 2016 all have look very similar they are all long with the name, date and location, they also have every performer located at each stage. Every programme looks very colourful and bright to express the hippie vibes and themes. It makes the whole look of the festival look happy and welcoming.

E) Location

Location Of Glastonbury
The festival is located in South West England at Worthy Farm near a village called Pilton in Somerset, six miles away from Glastonbury.

Map Of Glastonbury

The location of the festival is very accessible due to the organisation of the workers, people are able to get there by car, bus, coach, train, plane, bike, motorbike, caravans. The exact location is on a hired out field near Glastonbury, the area is massive and can fit around 200,000 people. Festival has access to food, drinks, merchandise, toilets, camp side, shops and all the stages.

F) Suitability

The festival is very suitable for the target audience. The accessibility of the festival is very accessible due to all the transport which is available to get to there. The accessibility of the festival around the whole festival had been done well bearing in mind how large the area is. They have WaterAid and toilets spread out everywhere, newar most stages, camps, food and drinks. Pedestrian routes have been made to go through the easiest way and made them go through where the toilets, wateraid, cash points and the foods. If people with disabilities would like to go they are more than welcome to, however they will need to email  disabledenquiries@glastonburyfestivals.co.uk for more information.

Glastonbury has copy right over photographs and videos taken at the festival. Some photos are allowed to be purchased there or later on online however they will have to be credited from Glastonbury Limited. Michael Eavis is the co founder of the festival and he has rights over the land which the festival occurs on each year. Crime and violence all together has been cut down a lot from 2010 up until now.

G) Legal and Ethical
The police and control of the festival altogether is stricter. At the venue everyone has to have their licence on them at all times in case of a search, alcohol will have to be purchased only with a valid ID. The performers are not allowed express any rude language on stage during the day , however after 11pm they are free to say certain words. Drug search has gone up to prevent all the illegal substances coming in.

Glastonbury are very strict on their main ethical issue which is environmental problems. They want everyone to respect the land that they are on as well as the area all around. e.g. sharing rides with people, litter minimizing, respect for the land, packing tents after yourself, part of the money for the ticket goes to charity Water Aid, 1400 volunteers for litter picking, no plastic bags (cotton bags),solar panels, reduction of CO2 emissions.

H) Health and Safety

Glastonbury hire out the Institution of Occupaational Safety and Health's (IOSH), they make sure that any hazards have been taken care of and if not they make sure they have plenty of time to fix it. All the organisers are there weeks before the event to prevent hazards and make the festival safe for all 5 days. It all starts with carefully setting up all the temporary structures aka stages, stalls, sitting area, camps, attractions. That also includes all sanitation, power and site service. All organisers and technical departments have a presentation/meeting from the Festival Operations Director (Tim Roberts) about all safety regulations. Within that everyone needs to make sure that fire alarms and team is perfect, weather conditions wont effects the event, water floods are taken care of, wires are safly put away, security is strict.

P2 M1 D1 - Meetings
Emails - plans for meetings

Event meeting (notes)

  • the work form the students needs to be collected
  • the edit needs to be done (unless we decide to play one after the other)
  • we need to make sure everyone can fit in the room
  • someone needs to speak to the IT Department
  • room C13 needs to be booked
  • Collect SD card from media department for all the work to be put together
  • if there are any emails sent with student's work that needs to be sorted out and added on the SD card
  • Release forms need to be made and sent to people via email or printed out to handed to them to sign ((agreement for their work to be shown))

Conclusion of the meeting
Connie will go to the media department to get the SD card and hand it out to the people in the class. She will check over all the footage make sure that it all plays fine. Reni will speak to reception and book the room C13 ASAP for the date of the event. There shouldn't be an issue with the room booking because on that day our class normally has a lesson. Reni will then speak to the IT department and check that there will be no issues with playing all the videos through the projector and if there are any issue how could they be solved.

Both connie and reni will make a plan of the room by the end of Friday 21st, of where all the tables and chairs will go and they will figure out how many people will be able to fit. By the end of friday the agreement release forms should be made ready to get sent out and signed by everyone. If there are already candidates ready to give out their work Connie will collect it from them and Reni will make sure the release forms are signed.

P3

My role for the event was to be the producer of it, this meant that I had to organise and make sure that all the work from everyone was handed in on our hard drive.
both me and connie presented all the work together and told everyone more about why we are doing it.

P4 - Feedback

P5 - Evaluation

a) fitness for purpose (own opinion - what worked well/not so well?)
The event went well, it was nice to have the media students all in one room to watch each other's work. Everyone through it was a nice afternoon spent away from doing any work and just watching peoples best work throughout the year. The only bad this that has happened when we tried to play all the videos which we had collected, but the videos wouldn't play. This made everyone wait for the event to start which was not ideal for us. We had to apologise to everyone for the inconvenience. The other thing that could have gone better was informing people in advance about it, the whole event happened very last minute. Overall the purpose was the entertain the audience and for them to appreciate everyone else's work in a calm relaxed environment. That is exactly what happened and based on the feedback the audience gave us everyone said that the theme and purpose was exactly as said.
b) process followed (did the exhibition/event run to plan? )
The event was planned to be the few days later than expected, however, we had to move the event two weeks earlier. Both me and Connie collected everyones work and put it on to one computer which was connected to the projector. We then sat down together and put the projects in order that we thought would go well. Then we gathered everyone together and spoke to them why we are making this event and thanked everyone for giving us their projects. When the time came for us to play all the videos at once the computer would not let us play it, it meant that we had to tell everyone to wait a little bit. Connie and I weren't sure what was actually wrong at the time therefore we asked for assistance. The teacher that was there at the time helped us out with the computer connecting it with the projector, he also helped with the sound.

c) strengths and weaknesses (what did the feedback say?)
Following the feedback from the class people, the main pointers that we got were that we needed more time, organisation, they needed more notice about the event and we needed practice. The issue with the time given was that we thought we had more time than we actually did. As a team we thought that the event will take place at the end of May but it turned out that we had to shift it to mid-May(10th). This gave us 2 weeks less than expected. Following through the timeframe given we had to collected peoples work quickly which then game the media student less time for them to prepare for the event as well. We also did not have enough time to practice how to work the projects with the computers to make them run smoothly. The strengths based on the feedback was that the whole idea of the event is good and it was a nice thing that it has happened. People also said that we handled the whole situation very well due to the time given, we did the work quickly and held the event the same week.
  d) appeal to audience (are there any possible improvements that can be used for future exhibitions/events?)
If we were to hold the event again the things we would do better next time would be: double check all the times and how long we have to hold the event, have better communication skills with the audience, use all our time given to collect the projects from all the media students and practice playing the event.
We would improve on communicating with our teachers so we have better time schedules. This would lead to us letting the whole class know when the exact date of the event will be and it will also give us an idea of when we would be able to practice on putting the projects all together.
