Unit 46 Music Video

Note down which band and which song you looked at

1. editing / post-production

Pumped up Kicks- Fast cuts between shots to make the video entertaining and engaging. Colours are brighter to and stand out which makes the whole video very happy. They have made some parts of the video look very old.

Dog Days Are Over- Editing the background, which was not filmed at the same time as the singer. There are people in the background where not in the same shot with the main people. There are also colours splashing around that have been put in post-production. Although the whole video is shot in the same room there are a lot of fast cuts made.

2. mise-en-scene

Pumped up Kicks- There are instruments included e.g. drums, guitar, piano

Dog Days Are Over- Their make up is bright red and colourful and very hip as well as their costumes. There are also drums, which come in half way through.

3. Content / performance

Pumped up Kicks- The band is performing a gig and that is what most of the video is based on.

Dog Days Are Over- The video is made in the same room where loads of different people come with and perform with the lead singer.

4. camera shot/angles types

Pumped up Kicks- Camera shot are mostly close ups and some close ups that are not focused. There are also some wide shots as well as wide shots and zoom in.

Dog Days Are Over- There are close ups of just top half of the faces of the performers, however that is only when the music slows down. When the beat goes faster the camera angles widen and longer shots are made.

5. narrative

Pumped up Kicks- The whole video is about a band that are travelling and performing gigs. They show how young people should enjoy their freedom and share it with their closest friends.

Dog Days Are Over- The lead singer starts the video on her own and dancers, drummers and a choir then join her. When the song hits its climax they all start disappearing and she is left on her own again by the end on the song.

6. conform / subvert / amplify

(tone of lyrics & music)

Pumped up Kicks- The song is vey upbeat and all about having fun.

Dog Days Are Over- There are both fast and slow parts in the song

NOTES
Improvements - Music Video
- make sure the narrative can be understood by anyone
- try to avoid using hand held camera
- when singing parts of the song make sure they are filmed multiple times and only use the footage that works well
Be The One and Break From Toronto

They both have a nightlife
Both have an element of pop

Break from Toronto focuses on the story and the people around not so much the artist, however, Be The One concentrates on the artist and the way she presents the song.
BFT has a lot of people in the shot at the same time but BTO only has the main singer with a few background people.

e) Legal and Ethical

Legally we are not allowed to to use Jack Johnson's song. We have emailed him and his PR group however, they haven't replied to our email. We will still go forward with using the song in the background but for copyright reasons when publishing it we will make sure that we mansion it is a college projects and not for personal use. The video has an issue with YouTube when first posting it, YouTube recognised the song a banned our video from being seen on any mobile devise because of the song. It can still be watched on a computer but not on a devise e.g phone, iPad,tablet. To solve this issue we will remove the video and post it on Vimeo instead if there are no other ways of fixing it.
None of the actors are wearing any clothing that we would have concerns with e.g Nike, Vans, Adidas for advertisement.
In the actual video we have a mixture of people featuring in it. There will be no issues with ethnicity or religions that could effect our video. We have all genders and a variety of people who have agreed to be filmed in our music video.
There is no rude, offensive or sexual content or language appearing in the video it can be viewed from anyone without a concern.

Relevant Certification
Our video can be viewed by anyone without any issues due to appropriate language and no rude content. Jack Johnson’s song will play from early morning and throughout the day. Our aim is to have teenagers listen to the song that is why we are planning on playing it early in the morning and afternoon which is before and after school/college/uni. The song will play on Radio 1, Heart or Capital FM.
The music video will last just over 3 minutes.
For the music video we will be publishing it on YouTube for people to watch at all times. The video will also be shown on MTV during the day. We are also aiming to have the video on iTunes and Apple Music. As we are using someone else's song who we don't have permission from we will make sure tat we label the video as a college project therefore, we have no issues with copyright.

a) review the footage (document)

  - how did you set up the equipment properly? (stills useful if possible)
Tripod was set up by starting from the bottom, working our way up. Pulling out each leg one by one making sure they are the same length so the tripod is standing up straight. Then we checked each part was locked in place so that they do not slide or move when the camera is placed on top. We took the top part of the tripod out and placing it on the camera. We placed it back in with the camera and adjusted where we wanted the camera to face.
The light which, we used in the studio, was just like the tripod with the same legs that can be pulled out. The colours of lights can be changed with different coloured plastic rectangles that can be places inside the light and can be taken out. We were very careful when we  changed them by taking one out of time and placing them to the table then taking the next one and positioning it inside the light.

b) Did you follow the script/storyboard? how yes/no
As a group we all decided that we we not going to follow the scrip or storyboard because we tried to shoot what we had and it did not work out. The footage ended up look bad and the story got confusing, therefore we decided to try out the GoPro. I went to film in London with the GoPro camera e.g my journey, walking around, going to different places. When we reviewed the footage it worked really well with the song and rhythm of it, we them decided to film extra in the studio lip-syncing. Now our video cuts backwards and forwards of the girls in London and the singing of the song.

c) did you follow safe working practices? How?
When we travelled from set to set when shooting we made sure that we had all our equipment in bag/cases so that none of the equipment was damaged. When setting up the tripod we checked who was around and we were aware with the space that we had. This way no one could get hurt when opening out the legs of the tripod, we did the same with the boom microphone because of the long stick at the end.The cable on the boom mic was wrapped around the stick so no extra wires where in the way to trip one up or get tied around the sound person's leg, this also provided us with extra space on set.
We make location recces and risk assessments for each location so we could prevent anything from happening. When we were shooting outside of Long Road we travelled as a big group so if there was any cars, bikes or slippery floors we would let each other know.

d) the production process is generally something like 1/ ideas 2/ script 3/ storyboard, and 4/ recces 5/ filming. How did you follow this process, and what did you do differently/went wrong?
When we first started filming nothing really worked out properly none of the footage looked decent or fit in at all with the genre. The location where we planned on filing all turned us down and we never got to shoot there. All we could film was when we went outside but that looked boring and the song is very happy. Following the production process we used all the dates of filming like we planned and used the characters that we wanted to.

e) what genre did you decide on and what genre conventions did you use?
- how did you know the equipment: sound and camera were working correctly - what process did you go through?
The genre of our song is Singer Songwriter/Alternative/Urban so the footage in the studio of the singer lip-syncing the song worked really well. The bight lighting fit in with the happy song and in the editing process we will add extra yellow effects to brighten it up even more.
We went out the week fore o do some test shots to get familiar with all the equipment that we were using. The camera person made sure the SD had enough space by putting it in the computer and checking how much space was left on it (and if there was anything that needed deleting) .When we put the SD card back in the camera we turned the camera on by checking that the red light on the screen was on. We took test shoot of the scene and played it back, we kept filming until we were happy with out footage.
Doing the same with the sound SD card by checking the storage that was available. The sound person put the headphones in the recorder and turned the sound on by making sure that the red light was flashing (the sound is recording). We tested the sound by getting the actors to read their lines and played it back to make sure we were happy with the sound and every line was clear enough.

Health and Safety BECTU
BECTU HEALTH AND SAFETY
Location
When we chose our outside location we checked the weather conduction to make sure we have appropriate clothing, equipment was safe, and the location had shelter close by. Each equipment was taken and carried in individual case/bag so that if it rains every equipment was protected. We followed the BECTU sheet which said ''equipment must safe, suitable, well maintained, thoroughly inspected after transport/installation'' to insure that everything was carried and put together safely. Our outside location was mostly outside so when but some of it was filmed my GoPro, therefore, we did not need to carry that much equipment with us.
However if the weather was bad enough that we couldn't shoot we had Long Road as a back up loacation. The actors and the crew were warned about the weather conditions therefore they would bring extra clothing that would keep them warm or cool if on that day it was hot. Again we followed the BECTU guide which said ''Protective clothing is necessary for wet, cold and hot weather working.''
When we were filming in the studio we had to insure that any cable from the lights and the  we all kept away from the camera and sound people as well as the actors. The light cables were taped to the floor so no one tips over them which could lead to crew members getting hurt or equipment damage. The health and safety craft cards said ''Cables must be safely routed or covered to prevent trips or falls and protect their integrity and insulation.'' In worst case scenario the lighting can cause a fire or explosion from over heating therefore we turned them off when we were not filming or practicing, we also kept our scenes very short so we were not using the lights for too long. ''Electricity can kill.  It can inflict electric shock and burns, and cause fires and explosions.''
The sound person wrapped the cable around the stick of the sound so the ''cable runs should be kept as short as possible.''
